Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) wrote the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the State Board of Education (SBE) Monday to raise concerns that they are ignoring requirements focused on achieving better educational outcomes for students.
Berger wrote he is also concerned that this decision may have been authorized in a closed meeting contrary to the requirements of the Open Meetings Law, and is calling on the State Board to correct these problems at its February 2016 board meeting.
“It’s disturbing that DPI has gone behind closed doors – in apparent violation of North Carolina’s open meetings laws – to take money intended to help children around our state learn to read and instead fund Raleigh bureaucrats,” said Berger.
